2025 Fall Foliage Report: Tioga County Reaches Peak Color |
Vibrant hues arrive early across Pennsylvania due to dry conditions |
Autumn's palette has arrived early in Pennsylvania, with Tioga County leading the charge into peak fall foliage.
In the state's north-central region, Tioga County's forests are ablaze with crimson, yellow, and gold hues, signaling an early peak this season.
Neighboring areas, including parts of northern, northeastern, and south-central Pennsylvania, are swiftly approaching their own peak colors.
Conversely, regions like southeastern Pennsylvania, encompassing Lancaster County, are just beginning to show signs of change, with minimal color transformation observed.
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) released its latest foliage report on Thursday, September 25, noting that the season's progression is about a week ahead of the usual schedule.
This acceleration is attributed to the prolonged dry conditions experienced in late summer and early fall.
While the dry weather is expected to produce vivid fall colors, it may also result in a shorter-than-usual display.
For those eager to experience the season's splendor, DCNR staff recommend several prime locations:
Tioga State Forest: A drive along the Route 6 corridor offers breathtaking views of the vibrant landscape.
Hikers can explore the Sand Run Falls trail for an immersive experience.
In Buchanan State Forest, areas within Bedford County are nearing peak color.
Gallitzin State Forest in Blair and Cambria counties boasts scenic overlooks on Stevenson Farm Road, as well as trails like Clark Run, Skyline Drive, and County Line.
For those in the Loyalsock State Forest, regions within Bradford County are showcasing early autumn hues.
In the Weiser State Forest, particularly in Carbon, Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, and Schuylkill counties, the Penn Forest and Roaring Creek tracts, along with Locust Lake and Hickory Run State Parks, are prime spots for leaf-peeping.
Sproul State Forest in Clinton County offers the Bucktail Natural Area along Route 120 between Lock Haven and Renovo.
In the Elk State Forest, areas like Hicks Run and Dents Run are recommended.
Susquehannock State Forest in McKean and Potter counties features the Billy Lewis Trail, as well as drives along Route 6 or Lyman Run Road.
For those near the Delaware State Forest, routes like Route 6, the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, and areas in Pike County such as White Deer Lake and the Buckhorn Tract are highlighted.
In the Pinchot State Forest, Salt Springs State Park and the D&H Rail-Trail in Susquehanna County are noted for their emerging colors.
DCNR will continue to publish weekly foliage reports every Thursday for at least the next six weeks, providing updates on the progression of fall colors across the state.
For those planning to witness Pennsylvania's autumnal beauty, now is the time to explore these recommended locales and experience the season's vibrant display. |
