Cambria County Farmers Rally Against Proposed Property Tax Hike |
Agricultural community voices strong opposition to impending tax increase |
Farmers in Cambria County are expressing significant concern over a proposed property tax increase, urging county commissioners to reconsider the decision.
Marty Yahner, president of the Cambria County Farm Bureau, addressed the commissioners during a recent meeting, highlighting the severe impact a nearly 7-mill increase could have on local agriculture.
Yahner emphasized that property taxes are obligatory, regardless of a farm's profitability, stating, "You have to pay them whether you make a profit in your business or not."
He pointed out that farmers already pay significantly higher property taxes compared to the average resident, with some paying up to five times more.
The proposed tax hike aims to address a $14 million budget deficit, with plans to increase the general fund tax rate to 30 mills.
This increase would require a court order, as Pennsylvania law caps counties at 25 mills for general use.
President Commissioner Scott Hunt acknowledged the frustration, stating, "No one's more frustrated and not wanting to do what we believe we have to do than myself."
The commissioners are set to vote on the proposed increase on December 23.
Yahner, representing the 480 member families of the Farm Bureau, vows to continue advocating against the tax hike, emphasizing the potential detrimental effects on the local farming community. |
