Cambria County Library Secures $2 Million Grant to Enhance Community Internet Access

Major Renovations to Provide High-Speed Internet and Modern Learning Spaces

The Cambria County Library in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, has been awarded a $2 million grant aimed at expanding high-speed internet access and modernizing its facilities.

This funding is part of the state's Multi-Purpose Community Facilities Program, which recently allocated $45 million to 49 projects across 27 counties, focusing on enhancing public access to reliable internet services.

Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized the necessity of internet connectivity in today's world, stating that access to high-speed, affordable internet is essential for education, career advancement, and telemedicine.

The grant will facilitate significant renovations on the library's first floor, including the creation of a new learning lab and multiple Wi-Fi-accessible spaces.

These improvements aim to provide residents with private workspaces equipped for virtual meetings and telehealth appointments.

Executive Director Ashley Flynn highlighted the library's evolving role as a community hub, noting that the building, over 50 years old, requires functional and aesthetic upgrades to meet current demands.

The planned renovations include adding five small and two large meeting rooms, as well as updating computer and learning labs.

These enhancements are expected to be substantially complete by the end of 2026.

In addition to the Cambria County Library, other local institutions have received funding through the program.

The Gallitzin Public Library was awarded approximately $942,000 for renovations, and Bishop McCort Catholic High School received nearly $900,000 to construct a new Technology Innovation Center in the city's Osborne neighborhood.

These investments underscore the state's commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that all Pennsylvanians have access to the resources necessary for success in the digital age.

As these projects progress, residents can look forward to enhanced facilities that support education, workforce development, and community engagement.
