Cambria County Observes National Human Trafficking Awareness Day |
Local Efforts Highlight the Ongoing Fight Against Modern-Day Slavery |
On Sunday, January 11, 2026, communities across the nation, including those in Cambria County, recognized National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, a pivotal part of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.
Established in 2010, this observance aims to shed light on the pervasive issue of human trafficking and mobilize efforts to combat it.
In Johnstown, Jessica Piro from Victim Services emphasized the critical need for awareness, stating, "One out of every seven runaway youth will be trafficked," highlighting that minors constitute 40% of the 24,000 individuals forced into modern-day slavery annually.
To discreetly signal for help, Piro demonstrated a universal hand gesture: extending the hand like a stop sign, tucking the thumb into the palm, and folding the fingers over the thumb.
This signal is often used at rest stops and other public places.
Flyers with information on seeking help are distributed throughout town and truck stops, directing individuals to call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.
Additionally, Piro mentioned a local hotline available at 814-288-4961 for those in need of assistance.
Community members are encouraged to participate in #WearBlueDay by wearing blue clothing and sharing photos on social media to raise awareness.
For more information on upcoming events and resources, residents can contact local organizations dedicated to combating human trafficking. |
