New Trail Segment Strengthens Link Between 9/11 Memorial Sites |
Pennsylvania land acquisition advances development of nationwide commemorative route |
The September 11 National Memorial Trail Alliance has secured a 7.7-acre property in Portage Township, Pennsylvania, marking a significant step forward in expanding the 1,500-mile trail that connects the three locations impacted by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The land has been transferred to the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority, which will oversee its integration into the trail system. Local trail advocate Brad Clemenson emphasized the importance of the acquisition, noting that the new right-of-way will allow for a substantially improved route through Cambria County. He added that the section is expected to offer scenic value while serving as a popular destination for cyclists and pedestrians, in addition to strengthening a critical link in the larger trail network. The effort involved collaboration among several organizations and individuals, including State Senator Devlin Robinson of Allegheny County, who serves as co-chair of the bipartisan 9/11 Trail Legislative Caucus. The multi-use trail system connects the World Trade Center site in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Once complete, the trail will span multiple states and jurisdictions, including Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. |
