Community Honors Vietnam Veteran and Penn Cambria Alumnus |
In a heartfelt ceremony on Thursday, the bridge carrying Route 53 over Bear Rock Run in Lilly Borough was officially renamed the Corporal James D. Sloan Memorial Bridge.
This dedication pays tribute to Corporal James D. Sloan, a Penn Cambria High School graduate who served valiantly during the Vietnam War.
After returning home, Sloan faced the challenges of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), leading to his untimely passing on March 12, 1971.
The ceremony, held at the American Legion Post 238 in Cresson, was attended by Sloan's family, local officials, and community members.
State Representative Jim Rigby, who spearheaded the legislation for the bridge's renaming, emphasized the importance of honoring veterans like Sloan.
He stated, "We owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women who serve and have served our country."
Rigby added that naming the bridge after Sloan ensures his story and the stories of many others like him will never be forgotten.
During the event, Sloan's brother, Patrick Sloan, shared memories of James, describing him as "a bull of a man" who was always willing to help others.
He recalled, "He was the type of person that would do anything for anybody."
Childhood friend Pattie Sanders Moncman also spoke, expressing that Sloan was like a big brother who watched over her.
She conveyed, "Jimmy, you are not forgotten. You are still very, very much missed and you are still very, very loved."
The dedication serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and the ongoing need to support those affected by the invisible wounds of war.
As the community reflects on Sloan's legacy, the newly named bridge stands as a lasting tribute to his service and the challenges he faced upon returning home. |
