Electricity Bill Increases in Cambria County Pennsylvania |
Addressing rising energy costs and electricity rates |
Residents across Cambria County are grappling with electricity bill increases, as recent rate hikes have led to higher monthly expenses.
In December 2025, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission approved adjustments that saw Penelec's residential rates rise by approximately 6.75%, increasing from 11.004 to 11.747 cents per kilowatt-hour. This change translates to a noticeable uptick in monthly bills for many households.
Community members have voiced their concerns, sharing experiences of significant financial strain due to these rising costs. One resident noted that despite consistent energy usage, their bill has nearly doubled over the past year.
In response to these challenges, local institutions are exploring sustainable solutions. The Cambria Heights School District, for instance, has initiated a project to install a solar array expected to cover nearly 100% of the middle and high school campus's electricity needs. Superintendent Ken Kerchenske anticipates this move will save the district over $2 million in electric costs over the next two decades.
Similarly, county officials are planning to install 10 to 15 acres of solar panels near the Cambria County Prison by the third quarter of 2026. This initiative aims to generate electricity savings for both the prison and the Cambria County Courthouse.
As energy costs continue to rise, such proactive measures may offer a path toward long-term financial relief and sustainability for the community. |
