Young Volunteers Brighten St. Michael Park |
Summer camp students team up with first responders for a day of service and community connection |
You are never too young to make a meaningful impact. Nearly 50 children from the Learning Lamp summer camp programs in Richland and Westmont spent a day at Berwind Wayside Park in St. Michael, working together to improve and beautify the space. The effort combined hands-on service with a chance to build stronger community ties. The event was organized through a partnership between Altoona-based Mountain Research and the St. Michael Fire Department. After completing their work, the children were treated to a hot lunch as a reward for their efforts. Throughout the day, local police officers, firefighters, and other first responders stopped by to engage with the group. The children explored emergency vehicles up close and learned about the daily responsibilities of those who serve their community. Karen Machak, Learning Lamp Licensing and Compliance Manager, emphasized the importance of the experience, noting that it introduces children to community service at an early age and helps them understand the value of giving back. Mountain Research representative Patrick Replogle highlighted the broader impact, explaining that while the focus is on fun, experiences like this can inspire children to consider future roles as firefighters, paramedics, or police officers. In total, 48 children participated in the event, leaving a lasting mark on both the park and their community. |
