Pennsylvania Governor Race 2026 Comes to Cambria County |
Stacey Garrity's gubernatorial bid and Josh Shapiro's reelection campaign both make regional stops focused on affordability and local investment |
With November bearing down on Pennsylvania voters, the 2026 governor's race has arrived at the doorstep of Cambria County — and both candidates are making their case to a region that has long waited for its moment in the spotlight.
Republican challenger Stacey Garrity, currently serving as Pennsylvania State Treasurer, held a weekend gathering with supporters in State College, where she hammered home a message built around household costs.
Groceries, utility bills, insurance premiums — Garrity argued that Pennsylvania families are being squeezed from every direction, and that the state's leadership has failed to respond.
At the center of her platform is a six-point affordability plan that includes property tax relief, cuts to utility costs, and a major push to expand natural gas production across the commonwealth.
On Medicaid, Garrity addressed the looming reality that hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians could lose coverage in the coming year, though she stopped short of offering a detailed legislative fix.
She also staked out a firm position on data center development, insisting that any new facility must supply its own energy and water without burdening local infrastructure or public utilities.
It is a stance that has resonated in smaller communities wary of large-scale tech projects arriving without accountability to the towns that host them.
Meanwhile, Governor Josh Shapiro brought his reelection tour to the Johnstown Train Station, joining Cambria County Democrats for a Saturday rally steeped in regional symbolism.
Shapiro used the occasion to draw a sharp contrast with federal-level decisions, pointing to rising measles cases and cuts to health care and food assistance programs as evidence of policies harming Pennsylvania communities.
On the economic front, Shapiro's record in the region carries some weight heading into the final stretch.
His administration recently secured a new advanced manufacturing facility at the former Moxham Bus Barns site in Johnstown, tied to a Swedish powdered metals company, and earlier this year announced the end of Johnstown's decades-long Act 47 distressed municipality status.
The governor also pointed to expanded apprenticeship funding, including a grant directed to Admiral Peary AVTS in Cambria County to strengthen its welding pre-apprenticeship program.
For a county still redefining its economic identity, those concrete investments carry emotional as well as political weight.
Shapiro noted that Johnstown was where he launched his campaign four years ago — a deliberate callback meant to signal continuity and commitment.
He referenced ongoing plans with the city's mayor but declined to offer specifics, promising instead that Cambria County would remain a priority if voters return him to office.
Whether that promise resonates in a community accustomed to political attention without follow-through remains the defining question of the final weeks.
A recent statewide poll shows Shapiro leading by a wide margin, but Garrity's team is banking on regional discontent and economic anxiety to close the gap before Election Day on November 3rd. |
