A pumpkin outing can be one of October's simplest pleasures: a little time outdoors, a few activities and something seasonal to bring home. Hite Farms Corn Maze near Patton offers Cambria County families a local option for that kind of afternoon, with remaining weekends before its published October closing date.

The farm's 2026 season runs on Saturdays and Sundays through October 25. Its hours page lists 1 to 8 p.m. on those days at 385 Eckenrode Mill Road, Patton. Weather can affect operations, so use the farm's latest update before setting off.

Admission is listed at $10 per person, with ages two and younger free. The farm says admission includes the corn maze, corn box, barnyard animals, wagon ride and other activities. Pumpkins and refreshments are extra. That distinction matters when planning the total cost for a household.

Choose a few priorities

Ask children what they are looking forward to before arriving. If choosing a pumpkin is the main event, leave time and energy for it rather than treating it as an afterthought. Someone who loves looking at animals may want a different pace from a sibling eager to try the maze.

Keep the plan short enough that the outing can change naturally. A farm visit is more enjoyable when there is room to pause, look around or decide that one activity is enough. You do not need to measure value by completing everything on the list.

Know the afternoon's timing

The farm's page lists the last wagon ride at 6 p.m., with timing potentially affected by available daylight. Do not assume an advertised evening admission window means every activity runs until the same hour. Ask the organizer about the parts of the visit that are most important to your group.

For families visiting with a grandparent or someone with access needs, contact the farm before buying admission. Ask specifically about the activities you hope to share. A broad attractions list cannot explain how every route or ride will work for an individual visitor.

A daylight visit can be its own Halloween tradition. Children who do not enjoy haunted houses can still join in the season through pumpkins, a wagon ride or time together outdoors. The goal is a good fit, not a test of who wants the biggest scare.

Make the budget clear

Allow separately for pumpkins and food if you plan to purchase them. If children will choose their own pumpkins, explain the spending limit first and ask how pricing works at the farm. That makes the decision easier than discovering the cost after everyone has fallen in love with a different choice.

At home, extend the outing with a simple drawing or display plan. Let each child sketch a face or give the pumpkin a name before deciding how to decorate it. A family photograph can capture the day without adding another purchase.

Check the farm's current hours and weather notice before leaving. Choose shoes appropriate for the activities, save the organizer's contact information and give the afternoon some breathing room. A local farm, a few favorite activities and one well-chosen pumpkin can make a satisfying seasonal memory.

Before adding an activity to a shared calendar, send everyone the same organizer link. That helps relatives compare the same information and makes a later change easier to communicate. Decide who will check for updates on the day, then keep the plan flexible enough to fit the people actually coming along.

We took the kids to Hite Farms a couple years ago and the wagon ride was their favorite part by far. Good tip about the last ride being at 6, we almost missed it that time.
