From Small-Town Fields to Notre Dame: Kamryn Kamzik’s Rise Through Softball |
Central Cambria graduate turns late start into Division I success through passion, persistence, and purpose |
Growing up, Kamryn Kamzik did what many young athletes are encouraged to do—she tried everything. From one sport to another, the Central Cambria graduate explored her options, unsure of where she would eventually land. That changed at age 12, when she first picked up a softball. What began as a casual introduction quickly became something more. Surrounded by friends who played and families involved in coaching, Kamzik found herself drawn into the game. It did not take long before that curiosity turned into a genuine passion. “I played a lot of sports growing up and wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do,” Kamzik said. “But once I tried softball, I just fell in love with it.” That love pushed her to invest more time and energy into improving. Travel teams, private lessons, and long road trips became part of her routine. As the level of competition increased, so did her confidence. By her early teens, Kamzik recognized that softball could be more than just something she enjoyed—it could shape her future. “Around 14, I started playing in a league out of Chicago, and that’s when I really saw my game improve,” she said. “That’s when I realized I wanted to focus on softball and see how far I could take it.” Her commitment eventually opened the door to one of the most prestigious programs in college athletics: the University of Notre Dame. But for Kamzik, the decision was not solely about sports. Academics and long-term opportunities played a major role in her choice. “I had to sit down with my family and think about what really mattered,” she said. “Getting a degree from a school like Notre Dame and setting myself up for life after softball was really important.” The decision felt right almost immediately. During campus visits, both Kamzik and her family sensed it was where she belonged. While she has achieved success at the collegiate level, Kamzik remains closely connected to her roots. Each summer, she returns home to host pitching lessons and work with young athletes across the area. Giving back, she says, has become one of the most meaningful parts of her journey. “Helping younger kids and seeing them where I once was—it gives you perspective,” she said. “Being able to give back to the community is something really special.” For those hoping to follow a similar path, Kamzik keeps her advice simple: find something you love and commit to it. “Fall in love with the game—whatever it is,” she said. “Stick with it, keep practicing, and put in the effort. It’s okay to take breaks and just be a kid, but if you really love it, give it your all.” From local fields in Cambria County to competing on one of the biggest stages in college softball, Kamzik’s story is a reminder that dedication, passion, and perseverance can take you far—no matter where you begin. |
