Johnstown Fire Chief Emphasizes Safety Amid Recent Fatal Fires |
Community urged to adopt preventive measures as colder months approach |
In light of recent tragic incidents, including a fatal house fire on Bedford Street that claimed a life on November 3, Johnstown Fire Chief Jim McCann is urging residents to prioritize fire safety as temperatures drop.
Chief McCann emphasizes the importance of functional smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, advising residents to test these devices regularly and replace batteries as needed. He also recommends creating and practicing a fire escape plan to ensure all household members know how to exit safely in an emergency.
Proper use of heating equipment is crucial. Chief McCann advises keeping space heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials and ensuring they are turned off when unattended. He also stresses the importance of not overloading extension cords and plugging heating devices directly into wall outlets.
With the holiday season approaching, Chief McCann reminds the community to be cautious with decorations, particularly those involving lights and candles. He suggests using flame-resistant materials and keeping open flames away from combustible items.
For assistance with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, residents can contact the Johnstown Fire Department at (814) 539-0889 ext. 200. Additionally, organizations like the Red Cross offer resources and support for fire safety measures.
By adopting these precautions, the Johnstown community can work together to prevent future tragedies and ensure a safer environment for all. |
