Johnstown Inclined Plane Nears Completion as State Inspection Advances |
Final safety assessments underway for historic funicular's reopening |
The Johnstown Inclined Plane is on the brink of resuming operations, with a comprehensive 30-day state inspection currently in progress.
Teams from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry and PennDOT’s State Safety Oversight Division initiated the extensive review process on Monday, a crucial step toward certifying the funicular for public use.
According to Cambria County Transit Authority (CamTran) officials, this inspection marks one of the final phases in the extensive rehabilitation project that began in 2021.
The restoration has encompassed significant mechanical and structural upgrades, including the replacement of sheave wheels and haul cables, as well as enhancements to the electrical systems.
Throughout the project, the community has faced temporary road closures, notably on Edgehill Drive, to facilitate safe and efficient progress.
Despite these disruptions, local businesses like Asiago’s Tuscan Italian Restaurant have remained accessible, ensuring continued service to patrons.
As the inspection proceeds, CamTran remains optimistic about reopening the Inclined Plane by the end of the year, aiming to restore this historic landmark to its full operational glory.
Residents and visitors alike eagerly anticipate the return of this iconic piece of Johnstown's heritage. |
