Cambria County teams delivered convincing sweeps and a hard-fought defeat in a busy round of high school girls volleyball.

For families following high school volleyball scores, the results offered plenty to discuss, from dominant serving runs to sets decided by only a few points.

Central Cambria made the loudest statement in Ebensburg, sweeping Johnstown 25-5, 25-15, 25-12.

Gianna Grimaldi led the attack with 14 kills, while Riley Anderson supplied 30 assists and Rowyn Ruddek added six digs.

The opening set was especially one-sided, but the sweep also reflected Central Cambria’s ability to keep pressure on Johnstown throughout the match.

Central Cambria won the junior varsity match as well, and both of its junior high teams earned victories.

Elsewhere in the county, Bishop Carroll Catholic had to work harder for its straight-set win at Bedford.

The Lady Huskies prevailed 25-22, 25-16, 25-23, holding their nerve in two sets that could have gone either way.

Olivia Gregg put together a strong all-around performance with 18 kills, 17 digs, two blocks and an ace.

Lilyann Strait contributed 31 assists, two kills and five digs, while Kaydyn Smith recorded 13 digs, a kill and three blocks.

Those tight first and third sets made this more than a routine sweep.

Bedford took the junior varsity match, leaving Bishop Carroll’s varsity result as the visitors’ highlight.

In Portage, the Lady Mustangs also finished in three sets, beating United 25-15, 25-23, 25-14.

Johanna Noel had 14 kills, Mya Selapack distributed 24 assists and Kylie Hess anchored the defense with 16 digs.

Mya Burda added 10 service points, giving Portage another way to apply pressure during the win.

The narrow second set was the closest United came to extending the match.

Portage also won a three-set junior varsity contest after dropping its opener 25-19.

The younger Mustangs recovered 25-21, 15-10, making it a winning day across both matches.

Penn Cambria’s night in Sidman told a different story: strong individual numbers, but no victory.

Forest Hills defeated the Lady Panthers 28-26, 25-23, 20-25, 25-11 in a match that began with little separating the teams.

Penn Cambria’s Kate Eckenrode finished with 12 kills, 14 digs and three blocks.

Maddy Kittell added 33 assists, Natalie Rossman had 14 digs and Eva Packer posted 16 service points.

The first two sets were painfully close for Penn Cambria, which responded by winning the third before Forest Hills pulled away.

Beyond the county, Altoona earned its second victory of the season with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-15 sweep of Cedar Cliff.

Kayden Weyandt had nine kills and a block, Selena Lopez-Oakes provided 17 assists and five digs, and Claire Betar collected 17 digs and three aces.

Altoona moved to 2-12, while Cedar Cliff stood at 2-15.

Bellwood-Antis faced a tougher outing at Clearfield, falling 25-17, 18-25, 25-18, 25-19.

Giuliana Gummo recorded 19 digs for Bellwood-Antis, and Ava Worthing added seven kills and two blocks.

Clearfield improved to 21-3, while Bellwood-Antis stood at 1-16.

Tyrone reached an even 8-8 record by sweeping Philipsburg-Osceola 25-15, 25-16, 25-22.

Peyton Martin contributed 17 assists and 12 service points, while Lola Woomer had 10 kills and five blocks.

One of the region’s biggest reversals came in Hollidaysburg, where Bald Eagle Area overcame a two-set deficit.

Hollidaysburg won the first two sets 25-23, 25-23, but Bald Eagle Area claimed the next three 25-20, 25-19, 15-6.

The five-set loss was Hollidaysburg’s first of the season, leaving the Lady Tigers at 16-1.

For sheer late-match drama, Northern Bedford’s comeback against McConnellsburg was difficult to top.

Down 8-0 in the deciding set, Northern Bedford rallied to win it 16-14 and take the match in five.

An eight-point deficit became a narrow victory, a reminder of how quickly a volleyball match can turn.

Grace Dainty had 11 kills and 15 digs, while Callie Miller supplied 30 assists and 19 service points.

Northern Bedford improved to 13-5 with the win.

These volleyball match recaps capture both sides of the sport across the area: commanding sweeps and finishes that stayed uncertain until the last set.

Gianna Grimaldi with 14 kills in that Central Cambria match is just impressive. That first set score of 25-5 says it all honestly.
