Bridges Named to Honor Local Veterans Signed Into Law

New legislation recognizes service and sacrifice of Corporal Sloan and PFC Lidwell

Legislation honoring two local veterans has officially been signed into law by Governor Josh Shapiro, marking a lasting tribute within the region’s infrastructure.

The measure stems from two proposals introduced by State Representative Jim Rigby (R-Cambria/Somerset), which were later incorporated into Senate Bill 78—a broader bill that designates names for various bridges and roadways across Pennsylvania. Governor Shapiro signed the bill into law on June 30.

Rigby’s original legislation, House Bill 182 and House Bill 633, designates two bridges along Route 53. The bridge spanning Bear Rock Run in Lilly Borough will now be known as the Corporal James D. Sloan Memorial Bridge, while the bridge over Patty’s Run in Gallitzin Township will carry the name USMCR Mary A. Lidwell Memorial Bridge.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women who have served our country,” Rigby said. “Naming these bridges in their honor ensures their stories remain visible and remembered in our communities.”

Corporal Sloan, a graduate of Penn Cambria High School, served during the Vietnam War. His military service earned him several honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

PFC Mary A. Lidwell graduated from the former Gallitzin High School in 1942 before volunteering for the United States Marine Corps in 1943. She later served with the Women’s Aviation Reserve Squadron, repairing aircraft during World War II. She achieved the rank of private first class and was awarded the Congressional Rosie the Riveter Medal for her contributions.

Rigby also highlighted the personal challenges faced by returning service members. He noted that Corporal Sloan battled post-traumatic stress disorder after his return home, emphasizing the importance of recognizing both his service and the struggles many veterans endure.

Lidwell’s commitment to service continued long after her military career. Rigby described her as a dedicated community member who remained active in her church, local initiatives, and public service efforts.
