Nature Conservancy Protects 279 Acres in Cambria County

New Addition Enhances Gallitzin State Forest and Supports Rare Bird Habitats

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has successfully acquired 279 acres in Adams Township, Cambria County, integrating this land into the expansive Gallitzin State Forest.

This strategic move aims to bolster habitats for rare grassland bird species and expand public recreational opportunities.

Gallitzin State Forest, encompassing approximately 24,500 acres, is nestled within the Allegheny Front—a critical migration corridor stretching over 200 miles across the Central Appalachians.

This region serves as a vital passage for numerous species, underscoring the importance of its preservation.

Lori Brennan, Executive Director of TNC in Pennsylvania and Delaware, emphasized the significance of this acquisition, stating, "The Allegheny Front is lush with incredible biodiversity. Safeguarding these acres within this vital corridor of the Appalachian Mountains means cleaner air and water, protected biodiversity, and more resilient forest habitats that can continue to thrive and adapt to our changing climate."

The newly protected area, known as Paint Creek, is named after the cold-water stream traversing the property, which lies within the Ohio River Watershed in the Allegheny River basin.

Surrounded on three sides by Gallitzin State Forest, this addition fills a crucial gap in the protected landscape.

Notably, the land is designated as an Important Bird Area, providing essential grassland habitats for various rare bird species, including two that are threatened or endangered.

For public recreation, the property features a network of accessible roads, one leading to a hilltop offering panoramic views.

This project was made possible through collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Forestry and the Hamer Foundation, along with grant funds from DCNR’s Community Conservation Partnerships Program.

Cindy Adams Dunn, DCNR Secretary, highlighted the broader impact of such initiatives, stating, "This addition to the Gallitzin State Forest is a win for conservation, recreation, and for the protection of critical wildlife habitat and environmental resources. These types of conservation initiatives are critical to ensuring present and future generations’ use and enjoyment of our natural resources."

For over 400 million years, the Appalachian region has been a bastion of biodiversity.

TNC's ongoing efforts to conserve this ancient landscape aim to preserve its rich variety of species, maintain the carbon stored in its forests, and honor the region's deep-rooted history and stewardship.

By focusing on areas like the Allegheny Front, TNC seeks to ensure the resilience and connectivity of these ecosystems in the face of climate change.
