Penn Highlands Community College Earns PA CARES Campus Designation |
College Recognized for Commitment to Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention |
Pennsylvania Highlands Community College has been honored with the PA CARES campus designation by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
This recognition underscores the college's dedication to preventing suicide and promoting mental health resources among its student body.
PA CARES, which stands for "Connect, Assess, Respond, Encourage, Support," acknowledges institutions that have implemented comprehensive mental health and suicide prevention plans.
These plans are designed to ensure that students have access to essential support services, fostering a safe and healthy learning environment.
Bridget Hall, a counselor at Penn Highlands, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "We know that students’ mental health matters for their focus in the classroom, success in courses, and retention from orientation to graduation."
She added that by sharing resources and information, the college cultivates a culture of care, working with students to ensure they receive the necessary support for success both inside and outside the classroom.
To achieve the PA CARES designation, institutions must provide:
Contact information for national, state, and local suicide prevention hotlines.
Crisis intervention services, including 24/7 access to trained mental health professionals.
Access to mental health services encompassing counseling, wellness programs, and crisis services.
Multimedia resources on mental health and suicide prevention, detailing warning signs and available services.
Communication plans to inform students about mental health services and suicide prevention efforts.
Post-intervention strategies to address the community following a student suicide.
Acting Secretary of Education Dr. Carrie Rowe highlighted the significance of such initiatives, noting that suicide is the second leading cause of death on America's college campuses.
She praised PA CARES campuses for their proactive and compassionate approach to engaging with learners and empowering them to thrive.
Penn Highlands Community College's commitment to student well-being reflects a broader effort to create supportive educational environments across Pennsylvania.
By prioritizing mental health resources and suicide prevention, the college aims to ensure that all students have the tools and support necessary for academic and personal success. |
