PolkaFest began in 1998 as a vision shared by “Polish Bill” Marano and his late wife, Debbie, who set out to create a premier polka festival in Johnstown. Recognizing the city’s rich ethnic roots, they knew it offered the ideal backdrop for an event celebrating traditional music and culture. In its first two years, the Maranos partnered with the former Johnstown Business District Coalition to host the festival across several downtown locations.

In 2000, Visit Johnstown took over operations and promotion in collaboration with the Maranos, helping the event grow in both scale and reputation. A year later, evening dances found a new home at the Masonic Temple on Valley Pike, whose expansive sprung wooden dance floor quickly became a favorite among attendees. The venue remained central to the festival through 2006, when PolkaFest expanded into Cambria City with multiple performance sites. By 2008, St. Mary’s became the title sponsor and primary host location, further solidifying the festival’s presence in the community.

Today, PolkaFest showcases some of the nation’s top polka bands alongside talented local and regional performers. Many featured musicians have earned Grammy nominations or awards, reflecting the festival’s high caliber. One of its defining features is the unique blend of Polish and Slovenian musical styles, presented in alternating sets—a format that has resonated with audiences for more than 25 years. The festival has also embraced a wider range of sounds, including German, country, and even rock-influenced polka, helping to attract younger generations.

Held annually on the first weekend after Memorial Day, PolkaFest draws an estimated 10,000 visitors from across the region and beyond, contributing to local tourism and economic activity. Admission is $5 on Friday and Saturday, while Sunday is free. Minors accompanied by an adult are admitted at no cost.
