Grant Restores Ebensburg Ballfields After Flooding Problems |
State funding helps improve drainage and keep local youth sports at home |
A longstanding flooding problem at two ballfields in Ebensburg Memorial Park has been addressed through a $42,000 state grant secured with the help of Rep. Frank Burns, D-Cambria. According to Borough Recreation Director Rebecca Williamson, persistent drainage issues had severely impacted the McDonald’s T-ball field, forcing 10 teams—representing about 80 children—to play their games at alternate locations last season. The First Energy adult field, used by the Ebensburg Softball Association and Bishop Carroll’s girls’ softball team, also required significant effort to remain playable. “Last summer, both fields were under water,” Williamson said. “The infield had lost its crown, and sand had been pushed into the outfield, causing water to collect. With this grant, we’ll be able to properly reshape the fields, install drainage, and use the correct baseball sand mix. A slight grading will also help direct water away.” Williamson emphasized the importance of maintaining quality local facilities for young athletes. “Providing a safe and reliable place for kids to play is essential,” she said. “Now, they won’t have to travel outside the community for their games.” She credited Burns with playing a key role in obtaining the funding, noting his advocacy during the Local Share Account Grant process, which concluded in December 2025. Burns said he worked closely with Williamson and local league organizers to strengthen the case for funding. “I made it clear how important this project was for Ebensburg,” he said. “I reached out to contacts in Harrisburg who were involved in the decision-making process and advocated strongly on the community’s behalf.” |
