Superloads create delays

Thursday, February 12, and Friday, February 13

Motorists in Blair, Bedford, Cambria, and Somerset counties should anticipate potential traffic delays on Thursday, February 12, and Friday, February 13, due to the transport of windmill blade superloads to the Highland North Wind Farm near Beaverdale in Summerhill Township.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has scheduled these superloads to depart from Maryland at 8:00 AM on Thursday, traveling through Bedford and Blair counties via U.S. 220 and Interstate 99 (I-99). They will exit at the Roaring Spring-Portage interchange to access Route 164 (Dunnings Highway/Johnstown Road) and proceed along Route 2010 (Frankstown Road) in Cambria County.

Additional transports are planned for 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM on Thursday, as well as at 8:00 AM, 9:00 AM, and 10:00 AM on Friday. These will utilize U.S. 219 through Somerset County, exiting at St. Michael-Sidman in Cambria County, and continue on Route 869 (Locus Street) and Route 160 (Forest Hills Drive).

Drivers are advised to remain vigilant for these slow-moving operations and consider alternative routes when possible. The superloads will occasionally pull over to allow traffic to pass, but delays are still expected.

For real-time traffic updates and road conditions, motorists can visit 511PA, a free service available 24/7 that provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, and access to over 1,000 traffic cameras.

As always, PennDOT emphasizes the importance of caution in all work zones. Motorists should drive slowly, eliminate distractions, and stay alert for direction from advanced signage.

Additionally, PennDOT reminds drivers that as of June 5, 2025, the "Paul Miller's Law" is in effect, prohibiting the use of hand-held devices while driving, even during temporary stops due to traffic or red lights. Violations are subject to summary citations issued by Pennsylvania law enforcement officers.

We strongly urge motorists to make safe choices, put phones out of reach, and avoid texting while driving.
