Trivia Question❓In the small Pacific island nation of Tuvalu, what is the traditional form of communication that is still widely used today? Answer at the bottom of the newsletter |
The Cambria County Transit Authority is launching CamTran PAY, a new digital fare collection system set to transform public transit for local riders.
Starting July 1, 2026, passengers will use either the CamTran PAY mobile app or reloadable smart cards, making paying fares faster and completely cashless.
This change is designed to boost convenience and accessibility for everyone using CamTran services.
Riders must load funds onto their digital account before boarding, as fareboxes will stop accepting cash payments.
Those who prefer not to use a phone can choose smart cards, easily reloaded and linked to e-wallets for quick tap-and-go entry.
CamTran staff will be ready to help passengers set up accounts and answer questions about the new fare system. Read More... |
The Cambria County Library in downtown Johnstown is undergoing a major first-floor renovation, which is set to deliver a modern, inviting space for all visitors by late summer.
Around 75% of the floor is being revamped to include two new meeting rooms and five quiet “focus” rooms, aimed at providing flexible workspaces for patrons.
Additional upgrades feature a self-checkout station, new seating areas, a hands-on learning lab, and a welcoming new entrance for smoother access.
Teens will enjoy an updated area, while a café space and fully ADA-accessible restrooms—including a dedicated ADA family restroom with an adult changing table—promise greater comfort and convenience for all.
A second renovation phase will target the community room, and plans are in place for a new computer lab once work wraps up.
The grand reopening is tentatively scheduled for August 20. Read More... |
Northern Cambria, Pennsylvania offers a blend of rural charm and safety in the heart of Cambria County.
Statistical reports highlight low violent crime rates—about 1.5 per 1,000 residents, nearly 60% below the national average.
Property crime here also remains low, fostering a sense of security for both families and retirees.
Residents appreciate the strong sense of community, where neighbors know one another and a peaceful, small-town environment prevails.
However, concerns linger about economic decline and limited local businesses, with some older buildings needing updates.
For those who value affordability and tranquility over city excitement, Northern Cambria delivers a safe, friendly atmosphere—though a quieter pace of life is part of the package.
It remains an appealing option for those seeking stability and a welcoming hometown feel. Read More... |

A Coat, a Comeback, and a Community Moment Johnstown sports legend Steve Smear made headlines this week for a heartwarming visit back to a local clothing store for a new coat — a sweet, small-town moment that's got people talking.
🦸 Local HeroesGallitzin's "Dauber" — A Firefighter's Legacy Lives On Christopher "Dauber" Cox spent over 30 years as a volunteer firefighter and paramedic with Gallitzin Fire Company before passing away from a cancer connected to his years of service. A friend and fellow first responder said Cox always answered the call, day or night, just like any volunteer firefighter, and now it's the community's turn to carry that torch for his family. While this isn't a brand-new story, it's very much active news this week as his family continues fighting for benefits (more below).
📢 Local CausesJustice for the Cox Family Four years after Christopher Cox's death, his widow Jennifer is still fighting for the state's line-of-duty death benefit — support she says the family was promised. Their attorney says renal cell carcinoma, the specific cancer that took Cox's life, is a type firefighters are ten times more likely to develop, and the family says the commonwealth has so far denied the claim. This is a cause worth watching (and rallying behind) as it plays out.
💰 FundraisersAmerica250 Cambria County Committee — Fundraising Push The county's America250 committee has been busy all year with Independence Day events, and they're still fundraising to cover costs — with a goal of $25,000, any surplus of which will go toward supporting local veteran initiatives.
🙋 Volunteer OpportunitiesCambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority — Trail Volunteers Needed If you love the outdoors, the county's trail system (over 50 miles!) always needs help with trash pickup, brush trimming, and mowing along the trails. Gloves, vests, and trash bags are provided.
Humane Society of Cambria County — Volunteers Wanted From dog walking to cat cuddling to yard work, there's a role for just about everyone at the shelter. Volunteers must be at least 10 years old (minors need a guardian present).
Cambria County Library — Friends of the Library Help shelve books, run the Inclined to Read bookstore, or pitch in on fundraising events like basket raffles.
