Richland Township drivers will encounter significant traffic changes as PennDOT begins a major bridge rehabilitation project on U.S. 219 starting Monday, April 13.

Northbound and southbound lanes under the Route 3104 (Mt. Airy Drive) bridge will shift to single-lane traffic to allow work to proceed safely.

Mt. Airy Drive itself will close entirely, with a posted 2.9-mile detour sending traffic through Solomon Run Road, Galleria Drive, and Oakridge Drive.

From April 27 to May 1, overnight road closures between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. will support bridge demolition and beam installation, impacting major local routes.

This $2.26 million project, led by J.F. Shea Construction, will fully replace the bridge’s superstructure and is expected to finish by October.

Motorists are urged to drive carefully in work zones and follow posted detours.

Cambria County’s Screen2Succeed initiative is empowering families to better prepare their children for kindergarten success.

This locally focused program delivers easy, playful activities for parents to use at home, encouraging learning through daily life and interaction.

Screen2Succeed goes beyond academics — families are urged to use play, conversation, and routines as opportunities to nurture both social and foundational skills.

Children build readiness by practicing skills such as taking turns, following directions, recognizing letters, holding a pencil correctly, and listening to stories.

Learning about personal details, engaging in pretend play, and counting shapes are also important elements that Screen2Succeed highlights for at-home practice.

Program manager Nicki Sliko notes that the foundation for school success is built at home, with meaningful learning happening during everyday moments.

Families can find resources and more information on The Learning Lamp website.

⚠️ Important Caveats for Visitors

Johnstown Inclined Plane: This iconic attraction — the world's steepest vehicular funicular — is currently closed for a rehabilitation project and will not reopen until the project is finished. As of early February 2026, the braking systems had been repaired and the communications system tested, but a reopening date had not yet been confirmed pending final state safety inspection. Verify status at inclinedplane.org before visiting. However, Asiago's Restaurant at the upper station remains open.

Heritage Discovery Center Winter Hours: During the slower visitor season (December 1–April 30), the museums are closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In the week of April 15–21, this means closed April 15 (Wed) and April 21 (Tues).

Heritage Discovery Center — Easter Closure: The museum closes for Easter. Easter Sunday 2026 falls on April 5, so this is not a concern for April 15–21, but check heritagejohnstown.org for any updated closures.

Ebensburg Borough had no specific events listed in the April 15–21 window per their event calendar (their next listed events are April 25 and May 1). The Ebensburg Arts in Bloom show falls the following weekend (April 25–26).

What’s Popping Up in Cambria County?

It has been a busy month for our local economy! From fresh food in the heart of Johnstown to cozy new retreats in Ebensburg, our neighbors are busy building things that make Cambria County a better place to live. Here are a few new spots you’ll want to put on your radar this month.

The Main Street Market

  • Location: 441 Main Street (The former Ryan Building), Downtown Johnstown

Opening: Summer 2026 (Construction began April 2026)
  • The Story: If you’ve walked past the old Ryan Building recently, you’ve likely seen the activity. Terra Vista Capital is transforming this historic space into a much-needed $1.1 million grocery market. The goal is to bring fresh produce, a full-service deli, and everyday staples back to the downtown corridor.

Why It’s Special: For years, downtown residents have had to travel miles for fresh groceries. This market isn't just a business; it’s a solution to a "food desert" that will make city living more sustainable for everyone.
  • Support Local: Keep an eye on the construction progress as you grab your morning coffee downtown! Once open, they plan to have extended evening hours to accommodate the after-work crowd.

The Loft at Winterset

  • Location: 931 Manor Drive, Ebensburg

  • Opening: Spring 2026 (Now booking reservations)

  • The Story: Nestled just outside the main bustle of Ebensburg, The Loft at Winterset is the newest addition to our local hospitality scene. Designed as a boutique event and lodging space, it offers a rustic-modern charm perfect for weekend getaways or intimate community gatherings.

  • Why It’s Special: The owners chose this location to highlight the natural beauty of the Alleghenies while providing a high-end experience for visitors. "We wanted to create a space where people feel like they’re escaping the world without ever leaving the county," says the management team on their social media.

  • Support Local: You can find them on Facebook at @TheLoftAtWinterset. They are currently taking bookings for spring and summer events, so if you have a graduation or bridal shower coming up, give them a look!

Jersey Mike’s Subs - Now Open!

  • Location: 4478 Admiral Peary Highway, Ebensburg

  • Opening: Late Spring 2026

  • The Story: Joining the growing retail hub along the 22 corridor, Jersey Mike’s is officially bringing its "Sub Above" culture to Ebensburg. This new location is part of the recent commercial boom near the new Chipotle and Dunkin’, making that stretch of the highway a one-stop shop for local commuters.

  • Why It’s Special: Beyond the sandwiches, Jersey Mike’s is known for its "Day of Giving," where 100% of sales go to local charities. We’re excited to see which Cambria County non-profits they partner with for their grand opening!

  • Support Local: Follow their national site for the exact grand opening date announcement. They’ll be open daily from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

🦸 LOCAL HEROES

People going above and beyond for our community

Cambria County Box 11 Volunteers: Feeding the Folks Who Protect Us

Here's a group of unsung heroes you should know about. Cambria County Box 11 is a volunteer-led group that provides food, water, and other essential supplies to emergency personnel working at the scene of active incidents. And now the community is giving back — in a big way.

Johnstown officials recently presented a $6,000 donation to Cambria County Box 11 to help the volunteer organization purchase a new vehicle. The money was raised during the county's first-ever First Responders Ball in November 2025, with the Johnstown Police Department, Fire Department, and city representatives all contributing. Captain Lianna Weir summed it up perfectly: "A lot of us are first responders ourselves. So it's great to have that respect and that adoration come back to us."

📣 LOCAL CAUSES

Important community issues that need your attention

The Fight for Martella's Pharmacy: This One Hits Home

This is a developing story that affects thousands of Cambria County families, and it deserves your attention. A federal judge is weighing decisions in a lawsuit claiming that Express Scripts dropped Martella's Pharmacy from major insurance networks, forcing patients covered by UPMC and Highmark to choose between higher costs or switching pharmacies.

Customers filing sworn statements describe decades-long relationships with the local pharmacy — including a man whose daughter has cerebral palsy and depends on Martella's delivery service, and a Windber couple who say their nearest alternatives are out-of-town big-box stores that don't deliver. As recently as April 7, Express Scripts formally challenged the latest emergency filing from plaintiffs seeking court intervention, and no ruling has yet been issued.

Cambria County Commissioners have joined the fight, publicly calling on Express Scripts to reconsider. Commissioner Scott Hunt stated: "This is about local access to care. Patients deserve the freedom to choose a pharmacy they trust."

What you can do: Continue using Martella's, contact your state representatives, and stay informed. Follow updates at WTAJ.com and WJAC-TV.

A public hearing will be held on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at 5:30 PM in the Anthony Truscello City Council Chambers. Written or oral comments will be accepted until Tuesday, May 12, 2026. This is your chance to weigh in on how federal dollars are spent in your neighborhood.

Two Families Displaced by Johnstown Fire Need Community Support

Two Cambria County families were left looking for a place to stay after a two-alarm fire damaged two homes in Johnstown along the 1000 block of Church Avenue. Johnstown Fire Chief Jim McCann said the fire began in one home and spread to a neighboring home, displacing both families. The fire was ruled accidental.

If you'd like to help these families, contact the American Red Cross Western PA Chapter at 1-800-RED-CROSS, or reach out to Community Action Partnership of Cambria County (CAPCC) at capcc.us — they connect displaced families with emergency resources.

About Hissterical: Domestic medium hair female cat

Don’t let the name fool you—Hissterical isn’t actually very hiss-terical at all… unless you count how hilariously lovable she is. This 10-year-old lady proves that age is just a number, because she still has plenty of playful energy and personality packed into her fluffy little self.

Hissterical absolutely loves to play and doesn’t seem to realize she’s technically considered a “senior.” Toys? She’s on it. Wand toys? Even better. Something moving across the floor that might be a toy… or might just be imaginary? She’s ready to investigate. Let’s just say retirement hasn’t slowed this girl down one bit.

When she’s not busy showing off her playful side, Hissterical is more than happy to soak up attention from anyone willing to give it. Pets, scratches, and quality time with her people are some of her favorite things. She enjoys being around humans and will gladly remind you when it’s time to give her the love she deserves.

And of course, we can’t talk about Hissterical without mentioning one of her greatest passions in life… food. This girl takes her meal times very seriously. If there were a gold medal for enthusiastic eating, Hissterical would already have it hanging proudly in her trophy case. The sound of a food dish being filled? Music to her ears. If you’re looking for a dinner buddy who will always be excited about snack time, she’s your girl.

Hissterical is the perfect mix of playful, affectionate, and just a little bit silly. She brings a lot of personality wherever she goes and isn’t afraid to make her presence known—especially if food or toys are involved.

Now she’s looking for a loving home where she can continue her important daily routines of playing, snacking, and soaking up attention like the queen she is. If you’re ready for a cat who will keep you laughing, keep you company, and keep a close eye on the food bowl, Hissterical is ready to pounce right into your life.

After all, life’s just better when it’s a little… Hissterical.
