A monumental investment from the state is set to enhance parks, trails, and open spaces across Central Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) has awarded nearly $82 million for vital recreation and conservation projects throughout the region.

This funding directly benefits our local communities.

In Bedford County, Green Park is receiving $640,000 for a major overhaul, including new pickleball courts and walkways.

Meanwhile, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy will protect over 700 acres of open space.

Further north in Cambria County, the Forest Hills School District is getting $180,000 to renovate its courts.

Conservation is also a priority in Centre County, with funds going toward protecting the Susquehanna River Watershed.

This strategic investment is designed to improve public health, grow local economies, and ensure all residents have access to high-quality outdoor recreation close to home.

Cambria County joined communities nationwide in recognizing National Human Trafficking Awareness Day on January 11, 2026, as part of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

Since 2010, this observance has highlighted the urgent fight against human trafficking.

In Johnstown, Jessica Piro from Victim Services stressed that minors account for 40% of the 24,000 people trafficked annually, and one in seven runaway youths faces exploitation.

Piro also demonstrated a universal hand gesture used to discreetly ask for help—tucking the thumb into the palm and wrapping fingers over it—often seen at public places like rest stops.

Flyers with resources direct those in need to the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 and a local hotline at 814-288-4961.

Residents are urged to wear blue for #WearBlueDay and post pictures online, joining the effort to raise local awareness.
