Cambria County joined communities nationwide in recognizing National Human Trafficking Awareness Day on January 11, 2026, as part of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.
Since 2010, this observance has highlighted the urgent fight against human trafficking.
In Johnstown, Jessica Piro from Victim Services stressed that minors account for 40% of the 24,000 people trafficked annually, and one in seven runaway youths faces exploitation.
Piro also demonstrated a universal hand gesture used to discreetly ask for help—tucking the thumb into the palm and wrapping fingers over it—often seen at public places like rest stops.
Flyers with resources direct those in need to the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 and a local hotline at 814-288-4961.
Residents are urged to wear blue for #WearBlueDay and post pictures online, joining the effort to raise local awareness. Read More... |
