April marks Child Abuse Prevention Month, prompting Cambria County leaders to emphasize the need to protect children from abuse and neglect. On Wednesday, county commissioners honored the Circle of Support Child Advocacy Center for its dedicated work in education, prevention, and outreach this April. The organization is hosting events all month to inspire local action, including symbolic blue pinwheel displays around neighborhoods and a variety of educational programs. These campaigns are designed to help families and residents learn important strategies to keep children safe. Diana Grosik, the center’s executive director, underscored the mission’s urgency, highlighting statistics that one in ten children experience sexual abuse before age 18. Community involvement is vital, Grosik noted, since awareness leads to prevention. The Pizza for Prevention event on April 8 will see Domino’s in Richland and Westmont donate part of their sales to support advocacy efforts. Read More... |
Chick-fil-A has cleared a significant hurdle toward opening a new location in Richland Township, Cambria County, after the Zoning Hearing Board granted key setback variances.
The approval allows the popular chain to build closer to Constable Avenue and Frances Street on Scalp Avenue, making room for a drive-thru canopy and dumpster enclosure.
The restaurant is planned for 1130 Scalp Avenue, the former Wolf Furniture site, which will be demolished to make way for a modern eatery and drive-thru.
Landscaping enhancements, including new evergreen trees, will help screen the property and maintain the neighborhood’s visual appeal.
Set to open by 2027, the Chick-fil-A is expected to employ 15 to 20 workers and operate daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., offering a new dining option across from McDonald’s in a bustling area. Read More... |

It’s an exciting time for our county! From the heart of Ebensburg to the historic streets of Johnstown, fresh storefronts are popping up just in time for spring. Here are two standout small business stories that perfectly capture the spirit of growth and community we love to see in Cambria County. A Fresh Financial Start: Healthcare First Credit UnionThe corner of Admiral Peary Highway is getting a friendly new neighbor this spring. Healthcare First Credit Union (HFCU) is preparing to open its brand-new Ebensburg Branch at 4574 Admiral Peary Highway, right in the heart of our busy retail corridor. While they’ve long served the medical community in Johnstown, this expansion brings their "people-first" banking approach directly to the Ebensburg area. The branch is led by CEO Mary Jo Stoltz, who has been a vocal advocate for expanding accessible financial services in our region. In a recent announcement regarding the expansion, the HFCU team noted that they chose this specific spot to better serve the growing residential and professional population in the northern part of the county. "Our goal has always been to meet our members where they are," the team shared. "Ebensburg is a thriving hub, and we’re excited to fill the need for a local, community-focused financial partner that understands the unique pace of life in Cambria County." Why it’s special: Beyond just being a place for a car loan, HFCU is celebrating this opening with a unique ".25% rate discount" on any new loan to help neighbors tackle those spring home projects or consolidate debt. It’s a great example of a business investing back into the local economy before they’ve even cut the ribbon.
Nourishing the Community: The Nutrition NookIf you’ve driven past 300 Prave Street in Ebensburg (tucked right behind the Young Peoples Community Center), you might have noticed some wonderful activity at The Nutrition Nook. This new community food pantry is a heartwarming collaboration between the Cambria County Child Development Corporation and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. It recently held its grand opening and is now a permanent fixture dedicated to ensuring no neighbor goes hungry. The project was spearheaded by Executive Director Kelly Purbaugh, who saw a growing need for a dignified, "shopping-style" pantry where families could choose the fresh produce and staples they actually need. During the opening, the sentiment was clear: "We wanted to create a space that felt like a local market—welcoming and accessible," the organizers shared. "By setting up shop in the heart of Ebensburg, we’re filling a gap in food security and making it easier for families to get healthy meals on the table." Why it’s special: Unlike traditional pre-packaged food boxes, The Nutrition Nook allows residents to select their own items, reducing waste and respecting individual dietary needs. It’s a beautiful testament to how Cambria County looks out for its own.

Big news for trail lovers and outdoor enthusiasts: the Ghost Town Trail's 32-mile loop — the second-largest rail-trail loop in the nation — is now complete. The final $4.6 million project included constructing two bridges, a pedestrian box culvert, and reclaiming former mine lands, closing a gap near Nanty Glo that's been in the works for decades. This is a massive win for our region's outdoor recreation scene and something the whole county can be proud of! Key Details: The Ghost Town Trail runs from Black Lick to Ebensburg.
