Cambria County is taking major strides in revitalizing its industrial roots.

The Johnstown Redevelopment Authority (JRA) has secured $200,000 from Pennsylvania’s Industrial Sites Reuse Program to launch a thorough environmental assessment at the historic Moxham Bus Barns in Johnstown.

This critical step involves soil and groundwater testing, air quality checks, and new monitoring wells, designed to ensure the site meets safety and environmental standards.

Once cleared, plans call for a high-tech powdered metals manufacturing facility—expected to create at least 20 new local jobs.

The Bus Barns, first used as streetcar facilities in the late 1800s, most recently housed Cambria Transit Authority buses before the JRA acquired them in 2019 to facilitate redevelopment.

This effort joins broader projects like the recently revived Cambria Iron Works and a new high school on a redeveloped brownfield, underscoring ongoing work to turn the region’s industrial legacy into fresh economic opportunities.

The Loft at WintersetEbensburg

Tucked away at 931 Manor Drive, The Loft at Winterset is preparing to become the county’s newest premier event destination. Set to officially open this Spring 2026, this beautifully renovated space is designed to host everything from elegant weddings to community celebrations. The venue is the brainchild of local entrepreneurs who wanted to preserve the rustic charm of the Ebensburg landscape while providing a modern, sophisticated backdrop for life’s big moments.

The owners chose this specific spot in Cambria County because of the breathtaking views and the "tight-knit, celebratory spirit" of our residents. "We saw a need for a space that feels both high-end and like home," the owners shared. "Our goal is to give local families a place to make memories without having to leave the county they love." The venue is already making waves for its attention to detail and commitment to using local vendors for its events.

How to support: You can follow their journey and see progress photos on their Facebook page (search: The Loft at Winterset). They are currently booking reservations for late spring and summer 2026. Give them a call at 814-408-5174 to schedule a tour or chat about your next big event!

Downtown Johnstown Food MarketJohnstown

Big things are coming to the heart of the city! Construction is officially underway for a new, much-anticipated food market in downtown Johnstown, with a projected opening date of Summer 2026. Located right in the central business district, this market is stepping in to fill a vital role: providing fresh fruits, vegetables, a full-service deli, and essential groceries to downtown residents and workers who have long been asking for a convenient, local shopping option.

The organizers behind the project, working closely with the Discover Downtown Johnstown Partnership, are passionate about urban revitalization. One project leader noted, "A healthy city needs a place where neighbors can walk to get fresh produce and a good sandwich. We chose downtown because we believe in Johnstown’s future and wanted to be part of the everyday life of our community." The market will feature local Pennsylvania-grown products, making it a true hub for "shopping local."

How to support: Keep an eye on the City of Johnstown and Discover Downtown Johnstown Partnership social media pages for the official naming announcement and grand opening date. Once open, the best way to support them will be by making them your go-to Wednesday lunch spot or your weekend grocery stop.

Jersey Mike’s SubsEbensburg

Bringing a fresh flavor to the 4478 Admiral Peary Highway corridor, Jersey Mike’s Subs is slated to open its newest location in 2026. While it's a well-known name, this local franchise is dedicated to the brand’s "A Sub Above" philosophy, which includes a heavy focus on community giving. The Ebensburg location is expected to join the ranks of local businesses that partner with area schools and non-profits for "Day of Giving" events.

The franchise owners expressed that they chose Ebensburg because of the area's steady growth and the friendly, hardworking nature of the local workforce. "We aren't just opening a sandwich shop; we’re joining a community that values quality and connection," the management shared. The shop will feature their signature fresh-sliced meats and "Mike's Way" toppings, providing a quick, high-quality dining option for those commuting along Route 22.

How to support: Once doors open, you can visit them daily for lunch and dinner. You can also download the Jersey Mike’s app to stay updated on their grand opening fundraiser, where a portion of proceeds usually goes back to a Cambria County charity!

🐾 Windber Kids & Community Fill a School Bus with Love for the Humane Society

This one will warm your heart. Windber Area School District organized a donation drive for the Humane Society of Cambria County, with Mlaker Student Transportation parking a school bus outside the high school for the past month where staff, students, and community members could drop off donations — including blankets, food, cat litter, treats, pet toys, and more. Principal Kimberly Moore said, "Our community always comes together and our kids love this project." Westmont Hilltop junior Avery Goncher, who helped unload the bus, said she was "shocked by the area's support."

🌟 Westmont Hilltop Senior Earns Scouting's Highest Honor with a Project Close to the Heart

Molli Lazzari, a Westmont Hilltop High School senior, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award — the organization's highest honor — by creating a Sprinkle Kindness Walk and installing a wind phone at Legion Memorial Park in Hollidaysburg. A wind phone is a disconnected telephone booth designed as a place to speak to loved ones who have passed — a touching tool for grief and healing. Her project was inspired by her own struggles with anxiety, and she wanted to create coping resources not just for her community, but beyond.

This high-energy boy is always on the move—whether it’s a brisk walk, a full-on run, or zoomies around the yard, Niko is your ultimate adventure buddy. He’s got major boy-dog energy, but don’t worry—he knows how to switch gears and relax when it’s time to chill. Think of him as the canine version of a sports car… fast, fun, and surprisingly smooth when he hits cruise control.

Niko loves playing with his canine friends, but with a twist—he prefers to show off his skills and antics through the fence! He’s got a playful rivalry going on, full of zoomies, tail wags, and playful barks, all while keeping things safely separated. Watching him interact with his neighbors is like watching a high-energy, four-legged game of peek-a-boo—he’s the ultimate fence-side entertainer.

This boy also has a serious love for treats—in fact, he’ll jump for joy the moment he sees one and will do almost anything to earn a tasty reward. While Niko is still polishing up his manners, he has already mastered sit and takes treats politely, proving he’s eager to learn and always motivated by delicious incentives. Treats in hand? He’s practically ready to paw-ty!

Of course, Niko knows how to balance his high-energy antics with calm, affectionate moments. After zooming around or fence-side playing, he enjoys lounging, soaking up pets, and showing off his sweet, loving side. He’s the perfect mix of zoomies and snoozies, action and affection, and his personality is as big as his enthusiasm for treats. Niko is looking for a home that can keep up with his adventurous side but also appreciates the calm moments. Whether it’s a long hike, a jog, or just hanging out in the living room, he’s ready to be your paws-itively perfect companion.
