Veterans Day 2026 in Cambria County: Honoring Our Hometown Heroes Across the County |
Veterans Day history, countywide memorials and verified events in Johnstown, Ebensburg, Cresson and surrounding communities |

Every November 11, Americans come together to honor the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces.
Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, giving communities throughout Cambria County an opportunity to celebrate service, remember sacrifice and recognize hometown heroes.
As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, the observance is especially meaningful.
The History of Veterans Day
On November 11, 1918, an armistice ended the fighting of World War I at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
President Woodrow Wilson called for the first Armistice Day observance in 1919, and Congress designated November 11 a federal holiday in 1938.
Following World War II and the Korean War, the holiday expanded to recognize veterans of every generation.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation renaming it Veterans Day in 1954.
After briefly shifting to October, the observance returned permanently to November 11 in 1978.
What Veterans Day Means Today
Veterans Day honors all Americans who served in the military, whether during wartime or peacetime.
Unlike Memorial Day, which remembers military personnel who died while serving, Veterans Day recognizes the service of all veterans.
It also acknowledges the sacrifices of military spouses, children, parents and caregivers.
Across Cambria County, veterans continue serving their neighbors as teachers, business owners, first responders, volunteers and community leaders.

Cambria County's Proud Military Heritage
Few places reflect the county's military heritage more visibly than the Cambria County War Memorial in downtown Johnstown.
Opened in 1950, the arena was established as a living memorial honoring Cambria County residents who served in America's armed forces.
The Cambria County Veterans Museum also preserves artifacts and stories that help younger generations understand the county's military contributions.
The region is connected to Marine Sergeant Michael Strank, one of the six flag raisers in the iconic World War II photograph taken on Iwo Jima.
On November 10, 2026, a special ceremony at the War Memorial will announce the Sergeant Michael Strank Legacy Project.
Every Community Has Heroes Worth Remembering
Military heritage extends across Johnstown, Ebensburg, Cresson, Patton, Northern Cambria, Carrolltown, Hastings, Nanty Glo, Portage, Lilly, South Fork, Summerhill and smaller communities.
Ebensburg's Veterans Memorial Park is at Crawford and Carter streets, while the Patton Area Veterans Memorial is off First Avenue.
Northern Cambria has a veterans memorial on Bigler Avenue between 20th and 21st streets; Carrolltown's American Legion Park is near Route 219 and Cameron Street.
Portage's VFW Memorial is at Legion Avenue and Lee Street; additional memorials can be found in Nicktown, Hastings, Nanty Glo, Beaverdale, Saint Michael, Lilly, South Fork and Summerhill.
