Cambria Conservation Authority Engages Community on Ghost Town Trail Enhancements |
Officials and residents collaborate to boost trail maintenance and economic impact |
The Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority recently convened with local residents and officials to discuss strategies for enhancing the Ghost Town Trail.
During the gathering, Cambria County Commissioner Tom Chernisky and Indiana County Commissioner Sheren Hess emphasized the trail's significance to the region's outdoor recreation economy.
They highlighted the trail's role in attracting tourists and fostering local business growth.
Commissioner Chernisky noted the challenges in securing funds for trail upkeep, stating, "It seems like there’s always money for grant dollars to build trails, but no money to maintain trails."
He praised the region's public-private partnerships and fundraising efforts, particularly the Friends of the Trails program, which has successfully raised funds for trail maintenance over the years.
The Ghost Town Trail, spanning 49 miles through Cambria and Indiana counties, is a vital component of Pennsylvania's $19 billion outdoor recreation industry.
Its popularity not only promotes physical activity but also stimulates the local economy by drawing visitors who utilize accommodations and services in the area.
In a significant development, the trail is set to become the first continuous loop trail east of Oregon by the end of the year, enhancing its appeal to both residents and tourists.
Community involvement remains crucial for the trail's success.
The Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority encourages volunteers to participate in trail maintenance activities, such as trash pickup and brush trimming.
Those interested can contact the authority to organize volunteer workdays.
Additionally, the authority hosts annual events like the Ghost Town Trail Challenge, offering opportunities for community engagement and support.
These collaborative efforts underscore the community's commitment to preserving and enhancing the Ghost Town Trail, ensuring it remains a cherished asset for generations to come. |
