Ceremony at 1st Summit Arena Celebrates Distinguished Veterans |
Johnstown, PA—In a heartfelt ceremony on October 18, 2025, the Cambria County Military Hall of Fame welcomed five distinguished veterans into its ranks at the 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial.
Army Pfc. Anthony Coll was honored for his extraordinary heroism as a medical aidman during World War II in 1943, earning the Distinguished Service Cross.
Army Pvt. John Gallagher was recognized posthumously; he was among the 672 servicemen who perished when a torpedo struck the USS Dorchester in 1943, an event that led to the famed Four Chaplains story.
Air Force Col. Douglas Lengenfelder was celebrated for his service as an Air Force pilot, his role in Combat Command in the Philippines, his tenure as Defense Attaché to Argentina, his contributions to NATO, and his survival of the September 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon.
Army Major William Horace Rose was acknowledged for his service as Adjutant of the Pennsylvania 54th Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, his injury at the Battle of Piedmont, and his subsequent role as the first mayor of Johnstown.
Army Col. Joseph Sartiano was honored for his involvement with the Office of Strategic Services during World War II, his investigative work for post-war tribunals in Japan, and his service with the CIA during the Vietnam War.
The ceremony underscored the community's deep appreciation for these individuals' sacrifices and contributions. Their stories serve as enduring reminders of the courage and dedication inherent in our nation's military history.
In addition to honoring these heroes, Johnstown continues to invest in its community. The city recently received a $500,000 Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant aimed at revitalizing local infrastructure and enhancing living conditions for residents. This initiative reflects Johnstown's commitment to honoring its past while building a vibrant future.
