Exus Renewables has launched a multi-million-dollar repowering initiative at its Cambria and Highland North wind facilities in Cambria County, aiming to extend the sites’ operational life while significantly increasing their energy output.

The project focuses on replacing aging components, including turbine blades and nacelles that have been in service for roughly a decade. These upgrades are designed to modernize the equipment and improve overall efficiency.

According to Seth Wilmore, Vice President of Permitting and Development at Exus Renewables, the improvements will have a long-term impact. He noted that the upgrades are expected to extend the lifespan of the wind farms by an additional 30 years, while also increasing power generation by approximately 30 percent, depending on site conditions.

During peak construction, the project supported nearly 190 jobs, providing a temporary economic boost to the region. In addition to job creation, local communities continue to benefit financially through tax revenues, lease payments to landowners, and agreements that fund road maintenance and repairs.

Wilmore also addressed common misconceptions about the land footprint of wind turbines. While turbines are highly visible, he explained that they occupy a relatively small area once construction is complete—often less than half an acre—allowing surrounding land to remain usable for other purposes.

Project leaders believe Western Pennsylvania remains well-positioned to play a key role in the evolving energy landscape. With strong wind resources along its ridgelines, the region continues to offer opportunities for both new developments and upgrades to existing infrastructure.

Wilmore emphasized that Pennsylvania’s legacy as an energy leader will continue, with wind power contributing to a more diversified energy mix. He noted that projects like this repowering effort are part of a broader strategy to expand renewable energy across the state.

Construction is expected to wrap up later in 2026, with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for September.
