Local organizations collaborate to provide safe havens during extreme temperatures |
Johnstown, PA – As the region grapples with dangerously low temperatures, community organizations are intensifying efforts to ensure residents have access to warming centers.
With wind chills plummeting to as low as 22 degrees below zero, the risk of frostbite and hypothermia has significantly increased.
In response, local entities are stepping up to offer safe, warm spaces for those in need.
St. Vincent DePaul Family Kitchen on Bedford Street has extended its hours to accommodate individuals seeking refuge from the cold.
Director Gregory Karcher emphasized the importance of community support during such harsh conditions.
Similarly, the Salvation Army on Vine Street has activated its facilities as warming centers.
Major Don Sanderson noted that the gymnasium has been equipped with cots and supplies to provide overnight shelter for those without a warm place to stay.
In addition to these efforts, the Johnstown Fire Department is collaborating with local organizations to disseminate information about available resources.
Fire Chief Jim McCann stressed the importance of public awareness, stating that the effectiveness of these centers relies on residents knowing they exist and how to access them.
Residents are urged to take precautions during this extreme cold period.
If venturing outdoors is necessary, dressing in multiple layers and covering exposed skin can reduce the risk of frostbite.
Community members are also encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors and inform them about the available warming centers.
For more information on warming center locations and hours, residents can contact the Johnstown Fire Department or visit local community centers.
Staying informed and utilizing these resources can make a significant difference in ensuring safety during this severe cold spell. |
