Downtown Johnstown Welcomes New Grocery Store and Firehouse-Themed Pub

Revitalization efforts bring fresh amenities to the heart of the city

After a prolonged absence, downtown Johnstown is set to see the return of a much-needed grocery store and the addition of a unique dining experience.

It's been over two years since the closure of Ideal Market left residents without a local grocery option. Now, plans are underway to transform the former Rite Aid building at Main and Franklin streets into the Main Street Market, aiming for a spring 2026 opening.

Mark Critz, Executive Director of the Johnstown Redevelopment Authority, expressed optimism about the project. "We're leading the charge on the Market on Main Street, collaborating with Terra Vista, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, the city, JARI, and Vision 2025," he stated.

In addition to the grocery store, the downtown area will soon welcome Jimmy T's Firehouse Pub, set to open in the former Hey Day Diner on Main Street. The pub, honoring the owner's father—a 35-year FDNY veteran—will feature a distinctive firehouse theme. The grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, November 8.

The owner shared his enthusiasm: "I'm excited to bring new life to Main Street and become part of the downtown community."

These developments are part of broader efforts to revitalize downtown Johnstown, filling gaps left by recent business closures and enhancing the area's appeal to both residents and visitors.
