Johnstown Inclined Plane Reopening Delayed to Early 2026 |
CamTran cites additional safety testing and inspections as reasons for the postponement |
The much-anticipated reopening of the Johnstown Inclined Plane has been postponed once again, with officials now targeting early 2026 for its return to service.
According to the Cambria County Transit Authority (CamTran), while the extensive rehabilitation project is nearly complete, further adjustments and comprehensive safety inspections are necessary before the historic funicular can resume operations.
CamTran's Executive Director, Rose M. Lucey-Noll, emphasized the organization's commitment to safety, stating, "Safety has always been our top priority for our employees, customers, and the community. Everything we do is guided by a SAFETY-FIRST mentality."
The rehabilitation project, which began in February 2022, has faced multiple delays due to unforeseen challenges, including the discovery of cracks in several strands of one of the cables and haul wheels that did not meet design specifications. These issues necessitated additional work and extended the project's timeline.
In the interim, CamTran is focusing on training and assessments for employees and staff to ensure a seamless and safe reopening. The anticipated reopening date is now projected between late January and early February 2026.
The Johnstown Inclined Plane, a cherished landmark, has been a significant part of the community since its construction in 1891. Its prolonged closure has been felt deeply by residents and local businesses alike.
In related community developments, the Johnstown Housing Authority was awarded a $500,000 Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant in September 2024. This grant aims to support comprehensive plans to revitalize neighborhoods and improve housing conditions, marking a significant step forward for the city's infrastructure and living environments.
Additionally, the Greater Johnstown School District community approved the district's $45,156,817 budget proposal for the 2025-26 school year by a vote of 350-151, reflecting a 70% approval rate. This budget ensures the necessary resources to provide every student in Johnstown with a high-quality education in a safe, nurturing environment.
As the community awaits the reopening of the Inclined Plane, these developments highlight ongoing efforts to enhance Johnstown's infrastructure and quality of life for its residents. |
