Pitt-Johnstown Retains Audubon International Certification

Campus Continues Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown has successfully maintained its status as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, reaffirming its dedication to environmental sustainability.

This prestigious certification, first awarded in 2019, requires recertification every three years to ensure ongoing commitment to environmental excellence.

To achieve this recognition, Pitt-Johnstown demonstrated high standards in environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, and resource management.

Christine Kane, CEO of Audubon International, commended the university's efforts, highlighting the leadership of James Bassett, supervisor of campus grounds, and his team in maintaining the 729-acre campus as a sanctuary for wildlife.

Participation in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program has led Pitt-Johnstown to implement projects that enhance wildlife habitats and conserve natural resources.

These initiatives include energy conservation, waste reduction, integrated pest management, and the naturalization of campus areas.

In addition to this certification, the campus boasts two LEED-certified buildings: the John P. Murtha Center and the Nursing and Health Sciences Building.

These facilities underscore the university's commitment to sustainable design and construction.

Through these ongoing efforts, Pitt-Johnstown continues to serve as a model for environmental stewardship in higher education.
