Johnstown’s Peoples Natural Gas Park has a greener setting after 27 trees and shrubs were planted October 23. The project brought together the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Vision Together, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies and the U.S. Forest Service, with support from Lawn & Order and help from Penn Highlands Community College students. The additions are positioned in beds and along fence lines to provide shade and beautify the venue while keeping space for events and views of the Stone Bridge.
The park opened in 2012 and serves as a setting for concerts, festivals and private gatherings. Its lawn, pavilion and renovated Community Foundation Oilhouse connect today’s community activities with a property that once served Johnstown’s industrial economy. The Oilhouse previously stored and distributed industrial lubricants, making the site’s current role another chapter in its long local history.
Find the venue at 90 Johns Street, near the train station and Stone Bridge. Before making a dedicated trip, check the schedule and organizer’s directions for the event you plan to attend; access and admission depend on the occasion. Our full story explains the planting partnership, the park’s background and the practical details that help readers plan a future visit. It is a small local improvement with a lasting place in the community’s shared spaces. |
Saint Francis University brought students and faculty together October 23 for a poverty simulation at the JFK Student Center in Loretto. Participants from nursing, physical therapy, social work, occupational therapy and public health explored scenarios involving housing, healthcare, family responsibilities and limited resources. The activity asked future professionals to consider how competing needs can shape everyday decisions and affect physical, emotional and mental well-being.
The experience emphasized compassion, reflection and collaboration across disciplines. It fits alongside the university’s broader use of hands-on education, including nursing training and the Experiential Learning Commons. That separate facility includes simulated hospital rooms, a skills lab and an apartment setting for practicing care in the home. These resources provide context for the university’s approach; the October poverty simulation itself was held at the JFK Student Center.
For local families exploring healthcare education, the story offers useful questions to ask about teamwork, communication and understanding patients’ circumstances. Check current admissions information for any program of interest: Saint Francis’ social work program is teaching out existing students and no longer accepts new applications beginning in 2026–27. Our full article looks at the recent exercise, the broader training resources and why learning to understand the whole person matters alongside learning professional skills. The focus is on thoughtful preparation for work serving others. |
Cambria County neighbors have until November 30 to donate new, unwrapped toys through State Rep. Frank Burns’ collection for Toys for Tots. Drop-offs are available at 535 Fairfield Avenue in Lower Yoder Township and 123 West High Street in Ebensburg. For donation questions or to confirm arrangements before making a trip, call the Johnstown office at 814-536-8400 or the Ebensburg office at 814-472-8021.
Choose an age-appropriate new gift and leave it unwrapped. Toys for Tots encourages donors to think about something a child in their own family might enjoy, with books, games and sporting items among its suggestions. Its national guidance excludes realistic-looking weapons and gifts containing food. Ask the local campaign about uncertain items, age needs or plans for a larger collection before shopping or organizing a drive.
Families who need assistance should follow the official local-campaign application instructions; the office donation announcement does not establish eligibility or distribution details. Our full story explains the local collection, practical gift guidance and the program’s history, which began in 1947. The November 30 deadline is specific to Burns’ office collection, so check separate arrangements directly with any other participating location. Share the verified local collection information with neighbors who are looking for a simple way to contribute. |
