Johnstown’s food community has helped turn a fundraising dinner into support for local students. The Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation announced October 21 that its annual Chef Auction raised $36,000 for the Supporting Scholars Fund and future culinary arts scholarships. Held at the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center, it was the Foundation’s fourth year hosting the event; those auctions have raised more than $185,000 since 2023. College fundraiser report.

Twelve culinary students worked alongside instructor John Dusack, Greater Johnstown High School students in the college’s partnership program and two Culinary Arts alumni to prepare reception and dinner food. The experience gave learners a practical setting to demonstrate their skills and meet people working in the food industry. Foundation director Carole VanMeter emphasized the value of those relationships for future internships and careers. Student support and scholarships.

The Supporting Scholars Fund includes Destination Graduation, Emerging Leader and Presidential scholarships. Students should check each award’s requirements rather than assume eligibility. Families can explore the college’s scholarship resources, while neighbors interested in helping can review Foundation giving options. The dinner has ended, but the result is a useful reminder of what local collaboration can support: educational access, practical training and the next step toward a student’s career. Check current details before making plans. Center for Culinary Excellence.

Bottle Works is inviting neighbors to help create a new mural for the Public Works building in Cambria City. Its CREATE Public Art team has organized free community painting sessions, and the public invitation says no prior painting experience is required. Support is identified from Pennsylvania Creative Industries and the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, with residents contributing hands-on effort to the project. Bottle Works event details and registration.

The organizer’s Special Events page links to the public painting sign-up. Visit Johnstown lists individual sessions, including November 21 from 10:30 a.m.–3 p.m., which is an advance planning opportunity beyond the October 28–November 3 issue week. Earlier October sessions are past dates. Check current availability and registration instructions before selecting a session rather than assuming every listed date still has space. CREATE public art initiative.

Listings identify Bottle Works at 411 Third Avenue, Johnstown, as the venue; the organization also uses 413 Third Avenue. Call 814-535-2020 to confirm check-in, suitable ages, supervision and any preparation needed. The mural’s eventual location is separate from the session meeting instructions, so verify where to arrive. For neighbors who want a practical introduction to local public art, this is an approachable way to participate; those unable to paint can explore Bottle Works’ other programs. Check current details before making plans. Tourism listing and project description.

Saint Francis University in Loretto has added a Sports Administration co-major for students interested in the work surrounding athletics. Part of its expanded 2026–27 academic offerings and highlighted in October 1 campus reporting, the program offers Cambria County families another nearby education option. It is designed to pair with another approved major, such as communications, marketing or management. Sports Administration program.

The sports component requires 36 credits alongside the other major’s requirements. Study areas include sports marketing, event and facility management, sports communication, law and intercollegiate athletics, with practicums and other applied experiences described in the university’s program information. Different pairings can suit students interested in media, organizational leadership or business operations. Families should ask how course sequencing and practical placements work for an individual student. New academic offerings for 2026–27.

The university describes a four-year design, but advisers should confirm a student’s actual plan, especially when transfer credits or a change of major are involved. Prospective students can begin with the Sports Administration page, request information from the Shields School of Business and arrange a campus visit. Ask about the second-major requirement, costs, aid and supervised experience. This is a new pathway to explore thoughtfully, with career possibilities treated as directions rather than guaranteed outcomes. Check current details before making plans.
