Belmont Community Church in Johnstown is buzzing with activity as volunteers collect and pack thousands of shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

This global initiative provides toys, school supplies, and hygiene items to underserved children across more than 170 countries.

So far, the church has gathered over 1,200 boxes in a single day, thanks to enthusiastic donations from local groups and families.

Each shoebox is carefully processed for overseas delivery, with every small item holding the potential to create lasting joy for a child in need.

Volunteers like Beverly Hofecker witness firsthand the immense gratitude these gifts inspire—sometimes providing a child’s very first personal possession.

The church also supports local missions and events, such as Roanoke Area Ministries and the Rescue Mission, uniting the community through compassion and outreach.

Donations and new volunteers are welcome throughout the week as Johnstown’s spirit of giving shines bright this season.

Looking for a new best friend? This week, we're delighted to feature Clam Chowder, a Domestic Short Hair cat from the Humane Society of Cambria County who is eagerly awaiting a forever home!

About : Clam Chowder

  • Age: estimated age 2 years 10 months
  • Gender: Male
  • Weight:

  • Adoption Fee:

  • Why Clam Chowder Needs You: "Clam Chowder is a 2.5-year-old boy who has made incredible progress since coming to the shelter in January 2025. He was the black sheep of his group. As friendly and loving as the other cats that came with Clam Chowder were, Clam Chowder was quite the opposite. A cat who was not comfortable with human contact for a while, we were convinced at first that he would rather live his life as a working cat. He displayed more characteristics of a typical working cat than not. After months of spending his days running from the hands that cared for him, one day, it just clicked for Clam Chowder. He slowly began allowing contact from one trusted staff member, then two, then more... before you know it, Clam Chowder is off our working cat list and on our adoption floor with the opportunity to get attention and play in a loving home with an adopter who will love him just the same. Clam Chowder still displays that "shy" look when you reach into his kennel. But he quickly takes to people and will headbutt into your hands for attention. He'll roll over as if he wants belly rubs, which you might get one or two in before he quickly flips over and headbutts your hand again. Clam Chowder is not a fan of being picked up. He prefers to go where he wants, when he wants but when he comes to you, expect lots of dramatic rolling over, purring and begging for attention. He is also very gentle about letting his humans know if he's uncomfortable. His playful nature comes out when he sees bracelets dangling or toys and he goes over the top when you put your hand under his blankets and "pretend to be a sneaky mouse." Clam Chowder is full of life and love to give and he's ready to make his second chance at life a reality! Come meet this sweet boy today with an approved application!

How to Adopt Clam Chowder:

If Clam Chowder sounds like the perfect addition to your family, don't hesitate!
