In a pavilion at Windber Recreation Park, the scent of fresh bread and simmering sauce brought back memories of home for attendees.

The Italian Sons and Daughters of America's Joseph Johns Lodge 214 organized the event, where visitors browsed market-style booths and enjoyed live music.

Accordion player Hank Edwardo, of Pittsburgh, entertained the crowd with a classic song.

The bridge carrying Route 53 over Bear Rock Run in Lilly Borough was renamed the Corporal James D. Sloan Memorial Bridge during a moving ceremony.

This honor recognizes Corporal James D. Sloan, a Penn Cambria High School alumnus and Vietnam War veteran who bravely served his country.

After returning from combat, Sloan struggled with PTSD, which contributed to his untimely death in 1971.

The dedication at American Legion Post 238 in Cresson drew his family, local leaders, and community members.

State Representative Jim Rigby, who led efforts for the renaming, stressed the importance of remembering heroes like Sloan and supporting all veterans.

Sloan’s loved ones recalled his strength, generosity, and lasting impact, while the bridge now stands as a visible testament to his service and the continued sacrifices of veterans.
